The Human Body The Temple of God; or The Philosophy of Sociology
Victoria Claflin Woodhull.
London: 1890. Octavo. First edition. Red boards with gilt lettering and design. Rubbing to the rear board. Rear hinge fairly tight, possibly indicating a repair at some point, but binding is solid. This book belonged to the author and historian Page Smith and bears the stamp of his signature on the first free end paper. A scarce work from one of the strangest and most profound figures in the history of American feminism, getting her start as a magnetic healer and earning a fortune as a broker on Wall Street, also the first woman to take a run at the White House (with Frederick Douglass as her vice president). Good.
"I shall not change my course because those who assume to be better than I desire it. Why is a woman to be treated differently? Woman suffrage will succeed, despite this miserable guerilla opposition. While others prayed for the good time coming, I worked for it."
