The Dispossessed

Ursula K. Le Guin.

Harper & Row: 1974. Second printing. Hardcover in a jacket. Octavo. Shelf wear along the top and the bottom of the jacket. On the white of the jacket there is minor smudging, most of which is a thin layer on the top of the back flap. Even less trace foxing on the back panels. Boards slightly bowed. Evidence of water damage on the front and back boards. Gift inscription to former owner on first free endpaper. 341 pages. Very good.

Anarchist sci-fi and one of Le Guin's all-time masterpieces. The physicist Shevek goes on a quest to reunite the peoples of a moon and its planet, one anarchist, the other divided by class and defined by great beauty. The Dispossessed proved once again how SF brings us to new appreciations of the ultimate political and philosophical questions. And it's every reader's treat that Le Guin did so with her mastery of the art of the sentence and legendary bullshit detector.

“For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think.”
