The Collected Works of Billy the Kid
Michael Ondaatje.
W.W. Norton: 1974. First American edition. Hardcover in a jacket. Octavo. Crown of the spine's jacket has some chipping. Spotting on the jacket. Slight fading across the tops of the boards. Spine slightly leaning. Bottom corner of the front board a bit bumped. 105 pages. Very good.
Ondaatje's known for his gorgeous language and fascination with the consciousness of people of vast differences. Now add that to a genre mix, ranging from prose to poetry to interviews, around the figure of Billy the Kid, vicious and child-like creature of legend. You get a weird, revisionist masterpiece just right for a readerly love of the Old West in the first American edition with a broadside-style cover.
"These are the killed.
(By them) -
Charlie, Tom O'Folliard,
Angela D's split arm,
and Pat Garrett
sliced off my head.
Blood a necklace on me all my life."
