The Boy Who Set the Fire
& other stories
Mohammed Mrabet. Translated by Paul Bowles.
Black Sparrow Press: 1974. Hardcover. Octavo. Mild foxing and staining along the top and bottom of the boards. Foxing on the top edge of the text block. 123 pages. Very good. Signed by both Bowles and Mrabet in the back of the book.
After Bowles became a celebrated writer and musician, his output honored the city which had fostered his art, Tangier. He began translating Mohammed Mrabet's tales from both Mrabet's life on the streets as well as the younger writer's imagination. Boy is one of the first of these collections published in the decades-long and unique literary partnership. This first edition's made all the more appealing by its hot pink endpaper that matches the cover. Plus there's a photograph in the last few pages of the young writer and white-haired literary lion together, both stylish.
"When Ouallou woke he would find himself alone in the house with Ali's wife, and they would sit and talk together. They did this for many months before anything happened between them."
