S.C.U.M. Manifesto

Society for Cutting Up Men

Valerie Solanas.

The Olympia Press: 1970. Revised edition. Softcover. Duodecimo. Light chipping along the edges of the wraps. A few small creases on the front wrap. Fading down the back wrap close to the spine. Minor foxing on the endpapers. Wraps are completely but delicately attached to the text block. Trace foxing on a few of the pages. Leaves are a little browned around the margins but the text is clean. 52 pages. Very good.

This 1970 edition is the first with the introduction by Vivian Gornick appreciating Solanas' volcanic rhetoric and her unique vantage into the problem of Western civilization. The ideas motivating Solanas' shooting of former collaborator Andy Warhol also power the Manifesto: that men have ruined everything and for the liberation and happiness of women must be destroyed. Also with a wary preface by Olympia publisher Maurice Girodias.

"Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex. It is now technically possible to reproduce without the aid of males (or, for that matter, females) and to produce only females. We must begin immediately to do so. The male is a biological accident."
