Ox Herding
Joel Weihaus. Block Prints by Arthur Okamura.
Cranium Press: 1971. First edition. Limited to seven hundred and fifty copies. Portfolio with loose broadsides. Square octavo. Minor fading on the portfolio, especially down the spine. Trace foxing on the attached papers of the portfolio as well as atop the first two broadsides. A few lines of fading on two of the broadsides. 9 broadsides. Very good.
Weishaus reworks Ten Bulls, a connected series of short poems from the Zen tradition detailing the practitioner's key steps to enlightenment. Each of Weishaus's eight poems are delicately arraigned by Clifford Burke and Holbrook Teter next to Arthur Okamura's prints, which are rather hypnotic. The type face is hand set Centaur, designed by Bruce Rogers. Words and lines as well placed as they are well phrased.
"Alone in wilderness,
lost in forests,
Searching, searching,
never finding.
Swollen rivers,
nameless mountains ...."
