Letter to the New Left

C. Wright Mills.

Students for a Democratic Society: ca 1960. First edition. Staplebound. Octavo. Chips along the edges of the pages and scuffing down the staplebound spine. Leaves are a little tan because of time. 12 pages. Very good. Extremely scarce.

Mills' influence on the Left after World War II has long been reported, and here we catch an exact moment of his decisive thinking. This was published by the group giving voice to and leading his intended audience, Students for a Democratic Society. It's an impassioned attack from a leftist against a liberalism believing ideology to be a thing of the past, a liberalism triumphant on the surface but despairing and complacent beneath.

"The end-of-ideology is very largely a mechanical reaction, not a creative response, to the ideology of Stalinism. As such it takes from its opponent something of its inner quality. What it all means is that these people have become aware of the uselessness of vulgar Marxism, but are not yet aware of the uselessness of the liberal rhetoric."
