Stories and Studies of Strange Things

Lafcadio Hearn.

Houghton Mifflin: 1904. Third impression. Hardcover. Octavo. Crown of the spine frayed. Bumping on the corners of the boards as well as a few scuffs on the boards. Text block has a couple of very small dings and one tape shadow on the preliminary leaves. Very good. 240 pages.

If you're looking for the many petals of Lafcadio Hearn's flowering genius, this is the book and edition. Translations of old tales (man of letters Hearn), transcriptions of tales he heard on his travels (man of the world Hearn), and extended meditations on the insects he observed (essayist-scientist Hearn) are all here, and all of it from his travels in Japan in the last years of his life.

"He buried the head by itself, in the grove behind the cottage; and he had a tombstone set up over the grave; and he caused a Segaki-service to be performed on behalf of the spirit of the Rokuro-Kubi. And that tombstone - known as the Tombstone of the Rokuro-Kubi - may been seen (at least so the Japanese story teller declares) even unto this day."
