Kingdom of Fear
Loathsome Secrets of a Star-Crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century
Hunter S. Thompson.
Simon & Schuster: 2003. First edition. Hardcover in a jacket. Octavo. Minimum shelf wear along the bottom of the jacket. Two tiny dots of stain on the back panels. A faint stain on the bottom edge of the text block. 351 pages. Signed & near fine.
Call it the evolution of a literary outlaw. Autobiography is a paltry word for the exploits of Thompson. He ranges from his beginnings to his travels to his political and legal battles. A book in great condition, signed. Like this copy as well as his guns he so enjoyed to play with, Thompson's mind and reflections in prose are crisp and clean. Of course, his tox screen said otherwise.
"Mr. Jones does not even pretend to know what's happening in America right now, and neither does anyone else. We have seen Weird Times in this country before, but the year 2000 is beginning to look super weird. This time, there really is nobody flying the plane... We are living in dangerously weird times now. Smart people just shrug and admit they're dazed and confused. The only ones left with any confidence at all are the New Dumb. It is the beginning of the end of our world as we knew it. Doom is the operative ethic."
