Five Months in the Himalaya
A.L. Mumm.
Edward Arnold: 1909. Hardcover. Large octavo. First edition. Green boards with gilt lettering. Rubbing along the edges of the boards. Mild foxing to portions of the text block. Both maps present, one with a closed tear. Overall a nice copy of this scarce title. 257 pages. Good.
Mumm's was the first book in English on mountaineering in the Himalayas. His feeling of being so fortunate to alpine there is on every page, and he turned gratitude into a duty to inform. The book is big and beautiful to hold and flip through as you take in details of each camp and pass and the wondrous photographs (more than 50) and fold out maps. Mumm loved to climb but he was a publisher; that's why this first edition on mountaineering is both comforting and impressive.
"The memory of this journey is a possession beyond all price."
