Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Hunter S. Thompson.

Third printing of the Modern Library edition in its pictorial dust jacket flat signed by Thompson and additionally signed and inscribed by Johnny Depp: "Ray was here - Johnny Depp." Near fine.

Due to the variance in HST's signatures (likely because of heightened states of intoxication at the time of signing) it's hard to be supremely confident about distinguishing fakes from the real without solid provenance. This book is from the collection of journalist Tom McIntyre and was signed for him at San Francisco's Booksmith following an interview with HST and Depp around the time of Terry Gilliam's film adaptation of Fear and Loathing. The bond between Depp and Thompson ran much deeper than the cinematic portrayal; the two were close friends, artistic allies, and fellow travelers on the Dionysian path, with Depp even picking up the hefty tab on Thompson's appropriately extravagant funeral. A rare and spectacular copy with the paired signatures of these cult figues and uncommon cast-iron provenance.

“What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.”
