Crucifix in a Deathhand
New Poems 1963 - 65
Charles Bukowksi. Illustrations by Noel Rockmore.
Loujon Press: 1965. Limited Edition. Soft cover with a front flap. Quarto. Bottoms and corners of wraps have scuffing. Small stains on the margins of a few pages. 101 pages. Very good. Signed in metallic orange opposite the colophon. Includes the bookmark printed for the book. Also includes a sympathetic and typewritten letter sent, and signed in black ink, by Bukowksi to editors, designers, and printers Jon and Louise Webb.
Opening up this quarto, with the black and blue of the Webbs' design and the black and white Rockmore illustrations, feels like going to Bukowski's New Orleans-style funeral. Above his L.A. return address on the envelope, Bukowski typed only "Buk."
"if I were all the man
that he is
cat ---
if there were men
like this
the world could
begin"
