Two books, one rare and the other one of a kind. James Houston wrote the Afterword to the quarto Lolla Bolly Press edition, and this later edition New Directions paperback is his working copy full of marginalia and underlining. (That's the one pictured.) For Houston, Jeffers knew the secret names of his imagination's home, the West Coast. Compare Houston's notes and formulas to his developed and woven-together Afterword insights. In the New Direction Jeffers copy, Houston wrote "Poet's Over-View" besides this: 
                                          "At dawn the high sea-bird, 
If any had risen so high, watching the hoary light 
Creep down to sea ..."
