Against the Grain
J.K. Huysmans.
Lieber & Lewis: 1922. First edition of the first English translation. Hardcover. Octavo. Shelfwear and dings along the edges and on the corners of the boards. Folds on the crown and spine have thinned the cloth. There is a ripple beside the title on the spine. Spine is leaning. Besides a few smudges on the text block, preliminary leaves, and a small one every fifty pages or so, the text is clean. On the endpapers textual Last two pages are have small dog ears. 331 pages. Very good.
The first English translation of the great book of Decadent literature. Jean de Esseintes vows to spend the rest of his life contemplating beauty holed up in a house outside Paris. Considering Huysmans' inventiveness, everything you could imagine happens, and a lot you wouldn't expect.
"His contempt for humanity deepened."
