A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf

John Muir.

Houghton Mifflin: 1916. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. Tips of the boards are scuffed, as is the crown and the heel. Lettering on the spine is beginning to fade. Text block and leaves are crisp. 220 pages. Very good.

John Muir, Earth-planet, Universe. That was written on the inside of the notebook that became "Thousand-Mile Walk." Muir is honored as a California writer, but he was not a parochial one. He was nothing less than a cosmic poet and scientist, passionately interested in anything natural and willing to walk any distance for the sake of that passion.

"I set forth on the first day of September, 1867, joyful and free, on a thousand-mile walk to the Gulf of Mexico."
