    Hanns Ebensten.

London: Derek Verschoyle Limited, 1954. Octavo. Rust-colored buckram boards, glit-embossed, bottom edge a touch rubbed, in a chipped pictorial dust wrapper. 95 pages. First edition, second impression. Near fine in a very good dust wrapper.

An Illustrated History of the Origin and the Development of the History of European Tatooing and a Survey of its Present State. Extensively illustrated with line drawings and photographs. Hanns Ebensten is not himself a tattoo fan. Despite the thoroughness of his researches he has remained un-tattooed except for a small embelem on his arm, "just to see whether it would hurt or not." It didn't.

"This is the story of European tatooing, telling briefly how it has developed during the four thousand years that separate the butterfly on Field-Marshal Montgomery's right arm and that tatoos discovered on the skins of Egyptian mummies dating back to 2000 B.C."
